Abstract

Affective disorders are mental disorders, also called mood disorders. They are characterized by mood swings changing from emotional lows or depression to highs(hypomania or mania). Studies show a high degree of comorbidity between cannabis use disorder and affective disorders. These disorders are hard to treat and very challenging to a psychiatrist. The aim of this study is to highlight the importance of identifying mood disorders in patients who abuse cannabis in “Ali Mihali” Psychiatric Hospital, Vlorë.The objective of this study is to identify mood disorders, symptoms, treatment, course and prognosis. Several scientific methods (such as desk research, observation, analysis, and statistics) were used to finalize this article. The integration of research methods was done based on the secondary data provided from the medical records at the Psychiatric Hospital “Ali Mihali” Vlorë. Clinical studies suggest that mood disorders co-occurring with substance (cannabis) abuse are usually hard to treat, causing a steady decline that leads to a sharp health deterioration, increased risk for suicide, longer hospitalization, rehospitalization, poor compliance, and aggravation of symptoms. Thus, although many people consider cannabis as a harmless substance, the study shows that cannabis abuse poses a high risk for the display of mood disorders.
